FTE is calculated using this formula:

FTE = (Full-time employees × Full-time hours + Part-time employees × Part-time hours) ÷ Full-time hours

  • 3 full-time employees working 40 hours/week: 3 × 40 = 120 hours
  • 2 part-time employees working 25 hours/week: 2 × 25 = 50 hours
  • Total = (120 + 50) ÷ 40 = 4.25 FTE

A standard FTE is typically calculated based on 2,080 hours per year (40 hours × 52 weeks). However, when accounting for common leave entitlements, the actual working hours are usually less. With approximately 4 weeks of annual leave (160 hours) and 10 days of sick leave (80 hours), the adjusted FTE hours would be around 1,840 hours per year.
