You might be wondering

What are billable hours?

Billable hours are the amount of work time that can be charged to clients or employers. This includes time spent directly working on client projects, attending client meetings, or performing billable services. Not all work hours are billable - administrative tasks, internal meetings, and professional development typically aren't billable.

Who needs to track billable hours?

  • Lawyers and legal professionals
  • Consultants and freelancers
  • Agency professionals
  • Accountants and financial advisors
  • Project managers and contractors

How are billable hours calculated?

The billable amount is calculated using this formula:

Total = Billable Rate ร— Time Duration

For example:

  • Hourly rate: $100
  • Time worked: 2.5 hours
  • Total billable amount: $250

For rate and time conversions, we use these standard assumptions:

  • 1 day = 8 hours
  • 1 week = 40 hours
  • 1 month = 160 hours
  • 1 year = 2,080 hours

What is the 6-minute billing increment?

The 6-minute billing increment is a standard practice, especially in legal and professional services. It divides each hour into 10 parts (60 minutes รท 10 = 6 minutes per increment). This makes it easier to calculate partial hours, as each 6-minute increment represents 0.1 hours of billable time.
